Zip⋅per [Zip-er] n. 1) Also called a slide fastener, a device used for fastening clothing, valises, etc., consisting of two toothed tracks or spiral metal or plastic coils, each bordering one of two edges to be joined, and a piece that either interlocks or separates them when pulled. 2) A unique fashion trend.
The zipper has been transformed from a functional piece of clothing to one of decadence and style. One will no longer find this interesting piece of function only among racks of jackets and coats. Now, lets say, a fashionista might find this piece of iconography slashed across a gorgeous leather bag (preferably by J.J. Winters!) or adorned on a sandal as seen on the BCBG Flat for spring. A new trend to emerge for zippers appears on tank tops, leggings, purses, shoes, belts and jewelry! You can never have too many zippers. They have become a staple in one’s wardrobe and have been splashed across page six, the urban outfitters catalogue and many department store look books. Zippers have popped up in a multitude of designer’s collections for spring 2009 and going into fall 2009. Some of my personal favorites pictured below!
